Types of Web Hosting for Your Business

January 29, 2019 Technology

Data storage technologies have made a tremendous leap forward over the past several years. Although memories of having to store data on local servers and systems are still fresh, now there is hardly a business that would choose these. Today, hosting companies use advanced hosting methods. Each one has its strong and weak points, and the choice depends on users’ goals, preferences, status and budget. There are several popular types of hosting, which users can choose to their liking and budget.

Web Hosting Plans

Shared Web Server

In a way, sharing a hosting is like sharing apartment between members of a large family. Let’s say, there is a bedroom, living room, dining room, bathroom, and kitchen: all these rooms are used by all the members. When the bathroom or is occupied or a cooking process is in full swing in the kitchen, there is no choice for the rest of the family but to wait until their loved ones free these rooms. It is pretty much the same with shared servers: its disk space and capacity is shared by several applications, and there is less room for a single one, because the total amount of resources is limited. Therefore, one application, if used intensively, can affect the work of the other one. In case such a server has to run, for example, two websites, one may take resource from the other and impede its work.

Dedicated Web Server

Unlike a shared server, a dedicated server can be paralleled with an apartment owned by a single tenant. He/she has the entire living space at his/her disposal, without any limits. Likewise, the resource of a dedicated server is used by a single “tenant.” He or she is free to choose applications, the OS, use RAM, disk space, etc., for his individual purposes. This is a great option for a website owner, because the monopoly rules out the risk of a crash and/or underperformance. The biggest and, most likely, the only disadvantage of dedicated servers is the high price.

Virtual Private Server Hosting

This one is some kind of chemistry of a shared and dedicated server. It is like, for example, a four-bedroom house, in which each bedroom is owned by a separate tenant. The residents are not allowed to use each other’s bedrooms in any way. Technically, a VPS server is a kind of shared server divided into several virtual dedicated servers. For example, a 8 GB RAM server used by four “tenants” provides 2 GB RAM to each of them, and there is no possibility that any one’s application will take more. Therefore, the speed of one application’s work cannot affect that of the other in any way, because they are located on different dedicated servers and do not interfere with one another.

Colocation

Colocation is a kind of hosting, when a user owns the server, and the server (the hardware) uses the technical infrastructure, which is owned by the provider. The latter maintains stable work of all systems to guarantee comfort for users by applying advanced protection (firewalls), cooling systems, and offers rack space (1U to 42U). Services may differ greatly from provider to provider.

Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting is one of the latest solutions. A cloud is made up of a group of synchronized and interconnected servers, each one set up to solve a bundle of complex tasks. This cloud technology is based on the work of virtual machines (VMs), which operate as independent server and can move between the physical servers, which form the cluster. This technique helps users preserve data and keep it secure even if one of the servers is down. Besides, there is always a good share of resources available, and a customer can easily access them when necessary. Cloud hosting boasts high flexibility, although there is a greater risk of data leaks.
